Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi

At the edge of the Sahara, near the Algerian border, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise above the village of Merzouga: the classic image of the Moroccan desert.

The sand sea stretches over more than 20 km, with dunes well over 100 m high that change colour from orange to pink through the day. You ride a camel into the dunes at the end of the afternoon, watch the sunset from a crest and sleep in a desert camp under the stars.

Merzouga is far from Marrakech, so it is usually reached on a journey of three days or more through the Atlas, the kasbahs and the Dades and Todra gorges, or on the way between Marrakech and Fès.
