Erg Chegaga, the wild dunes beyond Zagora
South of Zagora, at the end of the Draa valley, the dunes of Erg Chegaga are reached only by 4×4 tracks: a wilder, quieter Sahara than Merzouga.
The road from Marrakech crosses the Tichka pass and follows the Draa valley, a long ribbon of palm groves and kasbahs, to Zagora and M’Hamid. From there, a desert track leads to the dunes, where you spend the night in a camp far from everything.
For a shorter escape, Zagora and its nearby dunes can be reached in two days from Marrakech; Erg Chegaga needs three days or more.
